JIM FLOERCHINGER CLASS OF 1957 U CITY HIGH-- FLYNN PARK GRADE SCHOOL. Hey, Buddy, OK to share with this our classmates. I'm sorry to write and let you know that Jim Floerchinger passed away in New Zealand this afternoon. His son called me and said Jim died about 5:30PM, Chicago time. Jim had been a resident in a full-time Alzheimer's care facility for several years. I met Jim in about 1944-45 at Flynn Park. Many will remember him in plays at U. City, including H.M.S. Pinafore. I still have a picture of Jim from those days, although I can't lay my hands on it at the moment. I recall that Jim joined the USAF to avoid the draft, and soon after his unit was called up. But he got stationed at Scott AFB and could commute. He always was lucky. About the time he was to get out, he took a military hop to Japan and bought a bunch of Nikon camera gear and medical lenses. In those days you had to guarantee your flight home (commercially), if no hop back was available. When he showed up for his flight home, it looked like he was going to have to fly commercially, until he happened to mention he was a doctor. As soon as they heard "doctor", they put him on the next flight, which was full of injured vets. It didn't matter that he was an "eye doctor." Any doctor was okay. Still lucky! Jim was a great friend for many years. Jim is survived by his wife, Jenny, his son, Jimmie, and his daughter, Julia. I think he had three grandchildren. Gus Philpott |
